Summary

DISCLAIMER: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require reinstallation of your operating system. Microsoft does not guarantee that problems caused by editing the registry incorrectly can be resolved. Digitech Systems does not support editing the registry and is not responsible for any damage done to the system or installed applications. Use Registry Editor and these instructions at your own risk. For information on editing the registry, please see the following Microsoft knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986.

The most common cause of this error message is a bad registry entry made by Intuit’s QuickBooks application. We were made aware of this by other vendors that have seen similar problems with QuickBooks; this registry entry can negatively affect numerous applications such as PVE. If the system returning the message has ever had QuickBooks installed on it, then it is likely that you will have to delete this registry entry in order to make PVE function properly.

Before performing these steps, it is recommended that you back up the registry per Microsoft’s instructions at the above link. Once the registry has been backed up, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Start – Run and type in ‘regedit’ and then click OK.
  2. On the left-hand pane under My Computer, expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
  3. Expand the CLSID folder.
  4. Right-click the {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} key and select Delete.
  5. Close the registry editor, restart the PVE client and attempt to view a document.

Our testing indicates that this does not cause problems with QuickBooks, however we don’t use QuickBooks and will not be testing the majority of the functionality in the application.
