“Input string not in a correct format” error when attempting to manually install PaperVision Capture Windows servicesmain image

Description

If the PaperVision Capture Windows services fail to install during initial installation, and you subsequently attempt to install the services manually, you may receive the following error: Input string was not in a correct format

Summary

If the initial installation of the Capture services is unsuccessful, you can use InstallUtil.exe to manually install the services. However, running InstallUtil.exe may fail with the above error, and the resulting stack trace may mention the following class:

System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib

If this is the case, then there is a problem with one or more Windows Performance Counters on the target machine (a problem unrelated to PaperVision Capture yet preventing successful installation). Performance Counters provide information about how well the Windows Operating System, an application, or a service is functioning. To resolve this issue, rebuild the Performance Counters on the machine by following the steps below. Then, try to install the services again.

Follow these steps to rebuild Windows Performance Counters:

  1. Open a command prompt as an administrator
  2. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32
  3. Run the following command: lodctr /R
