Description

Receive Error 4438: Unknown Error when trying to initiate scanning.

Summary

This error can be generated from a variety of problems. Here are several options that can be tried to resolve this error; the easiest steps are listed first.

  1. Try cycling the power on the scanner and the computer, making certain that the scanner is powered up before the PC.
  2. If that does not work, run Data Group Maintenance from the Data Group menu.
  3. If neither of those is helpful in resolving this error, then it is likely one of the scanner driver files is corrupt or missing and you will need to follow these steps to resolve the issue:
  4. The first thing you will need to do is uninstall PaperFlow. This can be done by going into the Control Panel and selecting Add/Remove Programs and selecting PaperFlow. Note that this will not affect your data groups. Once PaperFlow is reinstalled, it will reconnect to the data groups automatically.
  5. Once PaperFlow is removed, search Windows for "SETSCAN.INI" and delete it from the system. Then search for "PIX*.*" and delete all of the files that are found.
  6. Reboot the system and reinstall PaperFlow. Once you log back into the system, you will be able to reselect the scanner and operate normally from there
