Users may see this error when attempting to view a document on Windows Server 2008. If the user clicks OK to the error message, the document will typically be displayed. In order to stop this error message from being displayed, the Desktop Experience feature must be installed.

Summary

Many applications and services from Windows Vista are not installed by default on Windows Server 2008. This is because most people do not need those features on a server. The Desktop Experience feature provides this added functionality and fixes this error.

Follow these steps to install the Desktop Experience feature:

  1. Open the Start menu and select Server Manager
  2. In the Server Manager, select Features
  3. In the Features window, select Add Features
  4. Enable Desktop Experience and click Next
  5. Click Install.
  6. In order to complete the installation, a reboot is required. The user will be asked whether or not to reboot the server; the server will not restart automatically.
