How to grant Log on as a service rights in Windows

Description

In order for the services in PaperVision Capture to work properly, the Windows login used for the service(s) must be granted ‘Log on as a service’ rights. This article covers this procedure for all supported versions of Windows.

Summary

  1. Login to Windows using an account with Administrator rights.
  2. For Windows XP and 2003 Server, open your Administrative Tools. Note: In the ‘Category View’ of the Control Panel, this option is found under the Performance and Maintenance category.
  3. For Windows Vista, 2008 Server and Windows 7, click on the ‘Start’ button, and begin typing Admin into the Search field. In the results under Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools.
  4. Double-click on Local Security Policy.
  5. Expand Local Policies and then User Rights Assignments under the Security Settings.
  6. Locate the Policy named Log on as a service and double-click it.
  7. Click the Add User or Group… button to select the user(s) you wish to grant this security right to.
  8. When you are finished, click OK to save all changes, and then close your Local Security Policy window.
  9. In most cases, it is not necessary to manually grant a user account the ‘Logon as a Service’ right, since the right is automatically granted when changing the identity of the service from the Windows Services Management console | Log On tab.
